Gear Selection

Choosing the right gear for every situation

Why it matters

Gear selection directly drives performance, energy use and control. The right gear keeps a smooth cadence (roughly 80–95 RPM), letting riders conserve energy, hold control on varied terrain and adapt quickly to changing conditions.

The technique, step by step
01

Understand the ranges

Bigger rear sprockets = easier (lower) gear; smaller = harder (higher) gear.
Smaller front chainring for climbs, larger for speed.
Shift one gear at a time to avoid jarring transitions.
02

Shift early & smoothly

Anticipate terrain and shift before steep inclines or descents.
Briefly ease off pedal pressure during the shift to avoid grinding.
Stay centred over the bike while shifting.
03

Keep the drivetrain healthy

Clean and lube the chain to reduce wear.
Keep gears properly indexed so the chain moves smoothly.
Adjust shifter reach for small hands; keep chain tension correct.
04

Adapt to the terrain

Climbs: shift low early, hold 80–90 RPM, no last-minute shifts under load.
Descents: shift higher before the bottom to carry speed onto the flat.
Technical: lower gears for control and a more direct feel of the rear wheel.

Practice drills
Cadence matching
On flat ground, hold 80–90 RPM while shifting to feel how gears change effort.
Climb practice
Shift to a lower gear before a gentle hill; pedal smoothly as it steepens.
Descent transition
Shift higher before a downhill ends to keep momentum onto the flat.
Common mistakes & how to fix them
Shifting too late
Look ahead and shift before climbs and descents.
Shifting under heavy load
Ease pressure briefly — protects the chain and makes the shift faster.
Riding one gear for everything
Encourage experimenting with gears during practice.
Signs of progress
Consistent cadence and fluid shifts
Anticipates shifts from the trail ahead
Avoids drivetrain strain by easing pressure
Parent pro insight

Narrate your own choices on shared rides: “I’m shifting to a lower gear for this climb to keep my legs fresh.” Seeing it models thoughtful gear use.
