The Race Start

Explosive starts and powerful acceleration

Why it matters

The start is a decisive moment in MTB and cyclocross. A strong launch secures the best line into the first corner and sets the pace. A sprint from a standstill blends positioning, timing and efficiency — practised until it’s muscle memory.

The technique, step by step
01

Pre-start setup

Choose a gear that lets the first 2–3 strokes be raw power, not spinning.
Dominant foot on the forward pedal at the 2 o’clock position for leverage.
Lean slightly forward, elbows bent, shoulders relaxed; look ahead at the line.
Stay calm but alert — a sharp reaction begins the start.
02

The initial push

On the signal, push off the grounded foot and drive the dominant foot down hard.
Lift the other foot onto the pedal so the first two strokes are strong and fluid.
Shift weight slightly back to keep rear-wheel traction on loose surfaces.
03

Building speed

Explosive yet smooth strokes for the first 5–10 seconds.
Rise to standing to maximise power, then sit once speed is stable to save energy.
Shift up progressively, timing each change to the rising speed.
04

Adapt to the terrain

Grass / mud: reduce torque, smoother strokes to avoid wheel spin.
Gravel / loose: keep slightly more weight on the rear.
Uphill start: begin in an even lower gear, power plus steady pedalling.
Practice drills
Timed launches
Whistle or countdown; measure time to a marker and chase consistent improvement.
Gear selection
Short sprints each starting in a different gear to feel how it affects acceleration.
Group starts
Practise in a group to hold a line and stay composed under pressure.
Common mistakes & how to fix them
Wrong gear
Too high or low wastes energy — make pre-race gear checks a habit.
Poor pedal position
Reset the pedal to the 2 o’clock position during warm-ups.
Over-braking into the first corner
Enter with confidence; don’t scrub speed needlessly.
Signs of progress
Explosive launch with minimal hesitation
Smooth gear transitions building speed
Composed in group starts and varied terrain
Parent pro insight

Starts are mental too. Use visualisation: a perfect launch, the power of each stroke, leading into the first corner. If they miss a pedal, teach a quick recovery — the first corner is one moment, not the whole race.
