Descending Confidence

Speed, vision and control going down

Why it matters

Descending is where vision, body position and braking come together. Confidence comes from looking far ahead, staying loose and balanced over the bike, and braking early so the bike stays settled through the fast sections.

When to teach: After braking and cornering are reliable

The technique, step by step
01

Body position

Stand on the pedals with knees and elbows bent, off the saddle on rough ground.
Keep pedals level and weight low and centred over the bottom bracket.
Stay loose — let the bike move beneath you rather than fighting it.
02

Vision

Look far down the trail, not at the front wheel.
Scan for the line and the next hazard, not the obstacle right in front.
Where you look is where you go — keep eyes up and moving.
03

Braking on descents

Brake before steep or technical sections, not in the middle of them.
Feather both brakes evenly; shift weight back on the steepest parts.
Release the brakes through corners once committed to the line.
04

Adapt to the terrain

Loose / gravel: lighter braking, weight back, smooth inputs.
Wet roots / rocks: stay relaxed, avoid sudden braking or steering.
Fast open descents: stay low and aero, hands ready on the levers.

Practice drills
Look-ahead drill
On a gentle descent, practise fixing your eyes far down the trail the whole way.
Ready position holds
Coast down a slope standing in the ready position, pedals level, staying loose.
Brake-before-corner
Mark a braking point before a bend; brake there, then roll through off the brakes.
Common mistakes & how to fix them
Staring at the front wheel
Lift the eyes and look far ahead to read the line early.
Sitting down and stiff
Stand, bend the joints and let the bike move under a loose body.
Braking mid-corner
Brake before the turn, then release through it to keep grip.
Signs of progress
Looks far ahead and reads the line
Stays loose and balanced in the ready position
Brakes early and rolls smoothly through corners
Parent pro insight

Confidence grows with controlled exposure. Build up gradient and speed gradually on terrain your rider already knows. Never push a scared child faster — a calm, repeated descent beats one frightening one.
