Expert turns on challenging trails

Why it matters

Switchbacks are tight, zigzagging turns on steep, narrow, uneven ground — a staple of hilly trails and a real test of timing, balance and technique. They come in two forms: climbing switchbacks that need traction and momentum, and descending switchbacks that need precise braking and control.

When to teach: Once cornering is confident on varied terrain
