Why it matters
Pumping generates speed without pedalling by compressing and extending the body in time with the trail's dips, bumps and rollers. Racecourses often string 4, 6 or 8 bumps together where pumping keeps speed and rhythm — and it conserves energy on every rolling or technical section.
