GEAR THAT IMPROVES THE RIDE When preparing a young cyclist for training or racing, selecting the right accessories is as important as choosing the bike itself. Proper gear ensures safety, comfort, and performance, while also fostering a sense of pride and belonging. Here’s a structured breakdown of the key items, practical considerations, and emotional factors to keep in mind when equipping your child for their cycling journey. Safety Comes First Helmet: A helmet is the most important piece of safety equipment. Proper fit is critical; a helmet that’s too large or small compromises protection. Look for helmets designed for your child’s type of riding, whether road, mountain, or BMX. Features like MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) technology or built-in visors for shade are worth considering.

For pump track racing and downhill (DH), it’s essential to invest in a proper full-face helmet as soon as your child begins training. Personally, I know two children who suffered severe facial injuries due to not wearing the appropriate helmet. On pump tracks, going over the handlebars and landing face-first on the concrete is a common type of accident, making full-face protection absolutely critical.

Regular checks for fit and wear are essential, as children grow quickly. Ensure that the chin strap is adjusted to the correct length, fitting snugly but comfortably, to prevent it from being too loose or insecure. Gloves: Cycling gloves provide grip, dampen vibrations, and protect hands in case of falls. Mountain biking gloves typically offer more padding and durability, while road gloves focus on aerodynamics and comfort. Both full-finger and half-finger styles are available, depending on the season and riding discipline. For winter riding you must buy an actual winter cycling glove. Footwear: Fit and Functionality Cycling Shoes: Shoes play a crucial role in power transfer and comfort. Road shoes have rigid soles for efficiency, while mountain bike shoes offer more flexibility and tread for walking. Given how quickly children’s feet grow, consider buying used shoes or keeping the next size ready. This approach ensures your child always has properly fitting footwear without excessive costs. Regularly check the cleats so they are not becoming loose.
