ESSENTIALS FROM POCKET TO GARAGE After three years of managing my son’s bike repairs and maintenance, I’ve developed a tiered system of tools that ensures I’m prepared for almost any situation. This system consists of three primary toolsets—pocket, bag, and box—organized to cover everything from quick fixes during a ride to full repairs at home or on race day. It’s not just for my son; I’m always happy to lend a hand to anyone in need. The Pocket: Compact and Essential The smallest toolset, the pocket option, is a single multitool that includes:

  • Hex keys (2mm to 6mm)
  • Torx keys (if needed, like T25 for disc brakes)
  • Screwdriver – both Philips and flat

This is perfect for quick adjustments during a ride. Lightweight and portable, it’s the first line of defense for common issues like loose bolts or minor adjustments. The Bag: Mobile and Ready During races, I carry a shoulder bag with the most important tools and supplies, ensuring I’m always prepared without being weighed down. A shoulder bag is more convenient than a backpack as it can easily be moved to the chest for quick access. Contents of the Bag:

  • Pocket with multitool +
  • Diagonal cutting plyer
  • Combination plyer
  • Individual Hex and Torx keys
  • Mini pump: Essential for inflating tyres quickly.
  • WD40 or similar
  • Duct tape: For emergency repairs like securing broken components.
  • Zip ties: Invaluable for fixing loose parts or securing items.
  • Gel packs: Handy for mid-race energy boosts.
  • Phone and wallet: Always useful in emergencies or for keeping track of the event.

This bag allows me to handle small repairs or adjustments without running back to the car or the main tool box. The Box: Comprehensive and Versatile The box is the most complete toolset and serves as my central repair kit. It stays in the garage but travels to every training session and race. This is where I keep everything needed for maintenance, repairs, and unforeseen issues. Tools:

  • Inner tube: Even for tubeless tyres, in case you can’t reseal the tyre without a compressor.
  • T- Hex wrench set (2mm to 12mm): Covers almost every bolt on the bike.
  • Torx wrench set: Useful for modern bike components, especially disc brakes.
  • Flathead screwdrivers: Ideal for cleaning mud out of cleats or tight spaces.
  • Spoke wrench: For tightening or correcting loose spokes temporarily.
  • Torque wrench: A basic model is sufficient (30–40 Euros), ensuring bolts are tightened to the correct specification.
  • Diagonal cutting pliers: Perfect for trimming zip ties or removing race numbers after the event.
  • Bike chain link plyer

Lubricants and Cleaners:

  • Chain lube: For smooth drivetrain operation.
  • Grease: For general maintenance and assembly.
  • Carbon grease: Essential for components like seat posts that may slip in carbon frames.
  • Threadlocker (e.g., Loctite 430): To secure bolts and screws.
  • Brake disc cleaner: Ensures optimal braking performance.
  • 98% alcohol: For cleaning components without leaving residues.

Spare Parts:

  • Nozzles: For tyres or pumps.
  • Chain connectors: Always useful for quick chain fixes.

This box ensures I’m prepared for any mechanical issues, whether during training or at the race.
