A well-maintained bike not only performs better but also lasts longer. This chapter will guide you on how to service your child's bike before and after each race. My personal experience is that the key is to check the bolts of saddle and the crankshaft before every race – we have some occasions with my son but I saw other fellow racers face the same problem, when the saddle is rotating or the crankshaft is just simply falling down. Cleaning After a race, bikes often accumulate dirt and grime, especially on muddy courses. Here's a straightforward way to clean them:
- Remove Excess Mud: Begin by removing any large chunks of mud or debris from the frame.
- Wash Thoroughly: Use a bucket of soapy water and a soft brush to scrub the bike, paying close attention to the chain, cassette, and derailleurs where grime builds up.
- Rinse and Dry: Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly to prevent rust from forming.
That’s the textbook method. In practice, I use a basic pressure washer for muddy bikes. I place the bike on a stand and carefully spray it down, including the chain, chain pulleys, and sprockets, from a relatively close distance. However, I avoid spraying directly at more delicate or expensive rotating parts, like the crankset or the bearings below the stem, to prevent damage. This method saves time and does the job effectively. Lubrication Proper lubrication keeps the bike running smoothly and extends the lifespan of its moving parts.
- After cleaning and drying the bike, apply a quality bike chain lubricant to the chain.
- Make sure the brake discs are not getting any of it – use brake cleaner spary
- Be sure to wipe off any excess lube.

Don’t forget to check the tire pressure and pump them up to the recommended PSI. Brake and Gear Check Before every race, make sure to check the bike's brakes and gears.
