Lubricating the Chain

Frequent lubrication is key to reducing friction and preventing rust:

• Apply a high-quality chain lube after every cleaning or every few rides, especially in wet or muddy conditions.
• Wipe off excess lube with a cloth to prevent dirt accumulation.
• Types of Chain Lubes:

Dry Lube: Ideal for dry, dusty conditions but requires frequent reapplication. Wet Lube: Designed for wet or muddy environments, offering long-lasting protection but attracting more dirt. Recognizing Wear and Replacing Chains Chains wear over time, and a worn chain can damage the cassette and chainrings.

Signs of Wear:

• Sloppy shifting.
• Chain slipping under load.
• Visible elongation (measured using a chain wear tool like the Park Tool CC-4).
• Tip: Replace the chain before it reaches 0.75% elongation to protect the rest of the drivetrain.
