The Heart of a Smooth Ride The bottom bracket is a critical bike component that connects the crankset to the frame, allowing the cranks to rotate smoothly. It plays a vital role in power transfer, ensuring efficient pedalling. Understanding the types, sizes, and crank compatibility of bottom brackets is essential for maintenance, upgrades, or replacements. Types of Bottom Brackets Bottom brackets come in two primary categories based on how they are mounted in the bike frame: Press Fit and Threaded (Removable).

1. Press Fit Bottom Brackets

Design: The bottom bracket cups are pressed directly into the frame’s bottom bracket shell. Advantages:

  • Eliminates the need for threads in the frame, allowing for larger bearing sizes and lighter frames.
  • Commonly used in high-performance road and mountain bikes.

Disadvantages:

  • Installation and removal require specialized tools.
  • May creak over time if not installed perfectly due to slight misalignments.

Examples:

  • BB86/92: Popular in road and mountain bikes, with a shell width of 86.5 mm or 91.5 mm.
  • PF30: Press Fit version of the 30 mm spindle standard, with a shell diameter of 46 mm.

2. Threaded Bottom Brackets (Removable)

Design: The bottom bracket cups screw directly into the frame's threaded shell. Advantages:

  • Easy to install and remove with basic tools.
  • Generally more durable and resistant to creaks compared to Press Fit.

Disadvantages:

  • Requires precise threading in the frame.

Examples:

  • BSA (English Thread): The most common type, with a 68–73 mm shell width.
  • Italian Thread: Similar but uses a different thread direction and is less common.
  • T47: A modern oversized threaded standard offering the benefits of larger bearings with threaded security.

Crank Connection Types The bottom bracket must be compatible with the crankset, which connects via different spindle types. Here are the main crank interface standards:

  1. Square Taper (Traditional)

Design: The crank arm connects via a square spindle that tapers inward. Advantages:

  • Durable and widely available, often found on older bikes and budget models.

Standard Dimensions:

  • Shell width: 68–73 mm (BSA).
  • Shell diameter: 34.8 mm.

Use Case: Entry-level bikes, touring bikes, or vintage models.
