FINDING THE RIGHT TRACTION FOR EVERY TERRAIN In this chapter, we will explore tyres and tyre pressure selection for MTB and XCO in various terrain and weather conditions. We'll provide tips, hints, do's and don'ts, common mistakes, and discuss the influence of front shock absorbers on tyre pressure recommendations. Tyre selection is important part of making sure they are supporting and not holding back the performance of your kid. As with all other rotating (and static) parts, especially for kids, weight is crucial. Don’t forget the back wheel has to be rotated, speeded up and the front wheel has to be turned – so besides the rim itself, the tyre is a great factor in wheel weight. The other important aspect of tyre is its pattern – the knobs on it and how they affect handling, grip the release of mud, etc. Tyre selection My biggest learnings in this area that for sure we, dads, can read several tests, but they are not really helping – since there are not many (or none) actual comparison tests for 24”-26”-27.5” and now even 29” tyres. The selection criteria when buying it is price – don’t expect a decent tyre under 30 EUR – so the total cost will be among 50-100 EUR. Also pay attention to different sub types of the same modell: for example Schwalbe’s Rocket Ron has different versions – starting from 30 EUR and going up 100 EUR. Besides price I’m checking the weight of the tyre – 300-350 gr tyres are good choice. Going above 450 is not. The Importance of Tyre Pressure Tyre pressure plays a critical role in a bike's handling, grip, rolling resistance, and overall performance. The ideal pressure varies depending on factors such as terrain, weather, and rider weight. Finding the optimal pressure for your child's bike will help them ride more efficiently, confidently, and safely. As a rule of thumb we can say that the softer the better – without taking a risk of a puncture (tubes) or turning off or loosing air (tubeless) You have to be able to push in the tyre with your fingers, which is around 1.6-1.8 bar. Tyre Pressure for Different Terrain Conditions

  • Hardpack and smooth trails: On hardpack or smooth trails, slightly higher pressures (25-30 psi for most riders) can be used to reduce rolling resistance and improve efficiency. However, ensure the pressure isn't too high, as this can compromise grip and comfort.
  • Loose or rocky terrain: Lower pressures (20-25 psi) provide better grip and shock absorption on loose or rocky surfaces. Lower pressure allows the tyre to conform to uneven ground, maintaining traction and control.
  • Mud and soft ground: On muddy or soft trails, a lower pressure (18-22 psi) can increase the contact patch, improving grip and reducing the chances of sinking into the soft surface.
  • Sand: When riding on sandy terrain, use a lower pressure (15-20 psi) to increase the contact area and prevent the tyre from digging into the sand.

Tyre Pressure and Weather Conditions

  • Dry conditions: In dry weather, you can typically use higher pressures to reduce rolling resistance and improve efficiency.
  • Wet conditions: In wet or slippery conditions, slightly lower pressures can help improve traction and control.

Front Shock Absorber Influence on Tyre Pressure While front shock absorbers mainly affect the bike's suspension, they can also impact tyre pressure selection. Bikes with front shock absorbers can often tolerate slightly higher tyre pressures as the suspension helps to absorb impacts and maintain traction. However, it's essential to strike a balance between comfort, grip, and rolling resistance based on the specific conditions. Tips, Hints, Do's and Don'ts, and Common Mistakes

  • Always use a reliable and accurate tyre pressure gauge to check and adjust pressures.
  • Start with the manufacturer's recommended pressure range and fine-tune based on rider weight, conditions, and personal preference.
  • Make small adjustments (1-2 psi) and test the changes on the trails to find the ideal pressure.
  • Don't use extremely low pressures, as this can lead to pinch flats, rim damage, or the tyre rolling off the rim.
  • Avoid over-inflating tyres, as this can compromise grip, comfort, and handling.
  • Check and adjust tyre pressure regularly, as it can change with temperature and altitude.
