FINDING THE BALANCE BETWEEN SPEED AND STABILITY If you’re into cycling, it’s not a great news that weight plays a pivotal role in cycling, but if you’re in it because of your child - as I were – you have to really understand it. It is particularly true in youth categories where ratio between the rider's body weight and the bike's weight is a lot higher. Consider a child weighing anywhere between 12 to 40 kg; a difference of just 4 kg in bike weight (ranging from 7 to 13 kg) can equate to a staggering 20% of their body weight. Imagine, for a moment, an adult athlete having to carry an additional 10-20 kg in a backpack in any sport – the impact on performance would be profound.
In cycling, weight is categorized into two types: static and rotating. Static weight includes components like the frame, seatpost, and handlebars. Rotating weight, on the other hand, encompasses the wheels, tyres, cranks, and cogwheels. This distinction is crucial because rotating mass has a more pronounced effect on a bike's dynamics. It influences how quickly a bike can accelerate and how swiftly it can maneuver turns. Therefore, reducing rotating mass should be a priority. Beginning with the lightest possible tyres is a wise first step, followed by investing in lighter wheels (preferably carbon) and eventually, a lighter frame. Another critical decision involves choosing the right fork. It might be more beneficial to opt for a regular fork without shock absorption – especially in U7 or even U9. While shock absorbers can add comfort and control on rough terrain, the additional weight might not justify the benefits for lighter riders. In many cases, the natural damping provided by a mountain bike's air-filled tyres is sufficient for a comfortable ride, especially on less rugged trails.
The key takeaway here is that lighter bikes can substantially enhance a young cyclist's performance. Not only do they reduce the overall effort required to pedal and maneuver the bike, but they also allow for quicker acceleration and easier handling. This is particularly important in competitive racing, where every fraction of a second counts. Parents and coaches should therefore carefully consider the weight of each component, prioritizing reductions in rotating mass for the most significant performance gains.
