ADVANCING SMARTLY IN LAPPED SCENARIOS Overtaking is a pivotal skill in cycling, especially in kids’ races where differences in skill levels, physical abilities, and equipment can create significant gaps within the field. On shorter laps, it’s common for the leading riders to lap the back of the field, creating a mix of fast and slower racers sharing the same track. This situation can be challenging for everyone involved, particularly for young riders still learning how to handle these dynamics. For the overtaking rider, the situation can feel intimidating. Even experienced kids may hesitate, unsure of how to approach a slower rider without causing confusion or risking a crash. Teach your child that overtaking requires confidence, planning, and a touch of assertiveness. It’s about seizing the moment and making a decisive move while keeping safety in mind. Planning the Overtake The key to successful overtaking is choosing the right moment and place on the track. Encourage your child to scan ahead and identify slower riders early, assessing where the overtaking move will be safest and most efficient. For example, if they see an upcoming straight section followed by a technical climb, teach them to push harder and overtake on the straight rather than risk being stuck behind on the climb, where a slower rider might struggle or even fall. Help your child understand the importance of reading the track and thinking ahead. This strategic approach not only saves valuable seconds but also builds their confidence in making quick decisions.
