Understanding the rules surrounding depot use is essential for compliance and success:

  • External Assistance Location: Assistance is only permitted within the depot area. A racer needing help outside this zone must make their way to the depot on their own.
  • Bike Swaps (Cyclocross): Racers can switch to a clean or repaired bike during the race. Practicing this maneuver beforehand is crucial for efficiency.
  • Part Replacements (MTB/XCO): Racers can replace wheels or repair other components but cannot switch to a new bike.
  • Clear the Depot Post-Race: After the race, remove tools, parts, and spare bikes promptly to make space for the next group.

Preparing for the Depot Proper preparation ensures smooth depot operations: What to Bring to the Depot: MTB/XCO:

  • Pump and tire levers
  • Spare inner tubes or tubeless repair kits
  • Multi-tool with hex wrenches
  • Chain lubricant
  • Extra water bottles

CYCLOCROSS:

  • Replacement bike (an MTB can be used as a backup for children’s races)
  • Spare wheels or tires
  • Cleaning supplies (brushes, towels, or portable sprayers)

Set-Up Tips:

  • Place spare bikes and tools neatly within your assigned depot box.
  • Ensure spare bikes are prepped with the correct gear ratio and pedal position (3 and 9 o’clock) for a smooth start.
  • Keep water bottles labeled and organized for quick handoffs.

Depot Location and Layout The depot is typically positioned within the racecourse loop, providing racers with access from multiple points on the track. Its central location ensures minimal time lost when racers require assistance. Entry and Exit:

  • Depots often have clearly marked entry and exit points to streamline traffic.
  • Familiarize yourself with these points during course inspections to plan your racer’s approach.

Selecting a Box:

  • Depots are divided into individual boxes or areas allocated to each team or racer.
  • Choose a box near the middle for easy access to both entry and exit points.

Depot Access Card:

  • Obtain a depot access card during registration to gain entry. This card is usually provided to parents or team staff, allowing them to assist racers during the event.

Key Depot Activities Bike Changes (Cyclocross): Swapping bikes is a hallmark of cyclocross racing, especially in muddy conditions. To execute efficient changes:

  • Teach your child to dismount quickly, releasing the dirty bike while grabbing the clean one.
  • Ensure the replacement bike is positioned with the correct pedal alignment and gear setup.
  • Practice this routine regularly to minimize lost time during the race.

Bottle Handoffs (MTB/XCO): In XCO races, hydration management often happens in the depot. Here’s how to optimize bottle changes:

  • Have 3-4 bottles prepared with water and isotonic drinks.
  • The racer should shout their preference (e.g., "water" or "iso") when approaching the depot.
  • Encourage the racer to either place the bottle in their holder or drink quickly and discard it for refilling.
  • On hot days, provide additional water for cooling—many racers pour water over themselves to regulate body temperature.

Pro Tips for Depot Success

  • Arrive Early: Set up your tools, spares, and hydration well before the race starts to avoid last-minute stress.
  • Know the Rules: Familiarize yourself with specific depot regulations for the race—some events have unique requirements.
  • Keep It Tidy: A well-organized depot setup saves precious seconds during the race and ensures you don’t forget anything post-race.
  • Practice Transitions: Time spent practicing bike swaps or bottle handoffs pays dividends on race day.

Stay Calm: A relaxed, focused demeanor in the depot keeps your racer confident and on track.
