The Racecourse

The racecourse itself is the heart of the event. In cyclocross races, the course is usually fully fenced or marked with tape to guide racers along the correct path. In XCO/MTB races, the course may include a combination of roads, trails, and tracks with marked turns and directional signage. Periodic signs reassure racers that they are on the correct path, and technical zones or feed stations may be strategically placed along the route. Familiarizing yourself with the course map and identifying potential challenges or key features, such as steep climbs or technical descents, can help your child strategize effectively. Bike Wash Area I-II A bike wash area is a practical feature available at many race venues, especially in muddy or wet conditions. Typically equipped with pressure washers, these areas allow racers to clean their bikes either after warm-ups or, in some cases, during the event if permitted. However, these facilities are often located some distance from the start/finish line, so it’s important to plan accordingly, especially if maintaining a clean bike is essential for performance. Keep a spare cloth and chain lube on hand to quickly dry and re-lubricate the bike after washing, ensuring optimal functionality.

When using the bike wash, remember that time is often critical, especially if there is a line. Focus on cleaning the key parts that impact performance—such as the drivetrain, chain, brakes, and tires—rather than spending time making the bike look spotless. The wash area is not the place to make your bike showroom-ready; prioritize functionality over aesthetics.

Additionally, on race days, be mindful of other riders who may be preparing for their upcoming heat. If a rider is warming up or has just completed a track preview and needs their bike cleaned quickly for a race about to start, it’s courteous to let them skip the line. Helping ensure everyone can perform at their best contributes to a fair and supportive race environment.
