Welcome to the second volume of the Ride to Rise series, a guide born from the practical realities of navigating race day as a cycling parent. Whether your child is just starting their journey in competitive biking or already tackling the thrill of races, this book is here to make the experience smoother, more manageable, and ultimately more enjoyable—for both you and your young rider. Race day can be a whirlwind. From the moment the alarm clock rings to the final cheers at the finish line, there are countless steps to manage: proper nutrition, timely arrival, navigating the registration process, securing the starting number, scouting the track, warming up, and more. Each of these steps is vital to ensuring your child is prepared, confident, and set up for success. Yet, many parents—myself included—discover the complexities of race day through trial and error, often missing crucial details that can put their child at a disadvantage before the race even begins. This book aims to change that. With step-by-step guidance, it walks you through every phase of race day, from pre-dawn preparations to post-race celebrations. It’s designed to demystify the process, reduce the stress, and equip you with the insights and strategies to handle each moment with ease. By understanding the rhythm of race day, you can help your child focus on what truly matters—enjoying the ride and performing their best. In addition to race-day management, this volume delves into the often-overlooked but critical subject of bike parts. Understanding key components such as the frame, brakes, handlebars, tires, rims, crankset, and chainrings is essential for any parent supporting a young cyclist. This book provides clear, accessible explanations of each part, what to prioritize, and how to ensure your child’s bike is race-ready. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll feel confident in making informed decisions about your child’s equipment, whether it’s choosing the right tires or fine-tuning the brake setup. If you’ve already read Volume 1, Parents’ Guide to Teaching Cycling Skills and Techniques, you’ll know that mastering the fundamentals of biking is a crucial foundation for racing success. Volume 1 focuses on building those skills—teaching your child how to ride with confidence, tackle technical challenges, and develop a love for cycling. Combined with the practical insights in this second volume, you’ll have the complete toolkit for guiding your child through every aspect of their cycling journey, from training to race day. The Ride to Rise series was created to fill a gap I experienced firsthand—a lack of clear, comprehensive resources for parents supporting their children in the world of cycling. My hope is that these books will not only make your journey smoother but also deepen your connection to this incredible sport. Let’s embrace the excitement, challenges, and triumphs of race day together, equipping our children to rise to every occasion and pedal toward their greatest potential. Warm regards,

RACING

When your child consistently engages in mountain/XCO biking 2-3 times weekly, introducing them to the exciting realm of racing can be a fantastic next step. This not only offers them the thrill of competition but also allows you to see how their skills stack up against their peers. Participating in a race can be a logical progression in their biking journey. However, it's crucial to be aware of various subtle nuances, tips, and strategies to ensure that nothing hinders your child's performance and enjoyment of the race.
