Keeping Flow And Efficiency On Trails

1. Understanding the Fundamentals

Momentum is a rider’s greatest ally in mountain biking and cyclocross, enabling smooth transitions through corners, over obstacles, and across varied terrain. For young riders, mastering momentum maintenance is essential for conserving energy, staying competitive on demanding courses, and navigating technical sections with confidence. By effectively balancing speed and control, they can avoid energy-wasting stops and starts, carry just enough momentum to tackle features without overshooting or losing traction, and maintain a steady flow that keeps them efficient and race-ready

2. Technical Breakdown and Body Movements

Momentum maintenance requires precise body positioning, smooth transitions, and a solid understanding of trail dynamics. Corners:

  • Line Choice: Teach your child to select the smoothest, widest line through a corner. Enter wide, hit the apex, and exit wide, allowing them to carry speed without excessive braking or acceleration.
  • Trusting the Tires: Encourage them to lean into the turn and trust the tire tread to grip. Practice finding the limit of traction, even if it means risking small slides or controlled falls—it’s a critical part of building confidence.
  • Pedal Position: Keep the outside pedal down and weighted, with the inside pedal up to prevent strikes.

Pumping:

  • What Is Pumping?: Pumping involves using body movements to generate speed and momentum by pushing down through dips or transitions and extending through rises.
  • Technique: Teach your child to bend their knees and elbows as they approach a dip, then extend their body upward as they exit to create momentum. This is especially effective in rollers or ruts.

Ruts and Technical Terrain:

  • Small Ruts: Use a neutral stance and allow the bike to roll through. Maintain speed to avoid getting stuck.
  • Large Ruts or Dips: Pump through the feature, using the downward slope to build speed and carrying it through the exit.

Braking and Acceleration:

  • Avoid Over-Braking: Excessive braking before a feature kills momentum. Teach your child to feather the brakes for smooth speed control.
  • Accelerating Smoothly: If acceleration is necessary, focus on steady, powerful pedal strokes to regain lost speed efficiently.
