• Keep your cadence high, aiming for consistent and quick revolutions.

Gearing:

• Start in a gear that’s easy enough to allow quick acceleration but not so low that pedalling becomes frantic.
• Shift up progressively as momentum builds, timing each gear change to match the increase in speed.

Body Position Adjustments:

• Gradually rise to a standing position during the initial sprint to maximize power output.
• Return to a seated position once you reach a stable speed, conserving energy for the rest of the race.

3. Progression: Advanced Sprinting Techniques

As your child becomes proficient, incorporate advanced techniques to refine their starts:

• Clipped-In Starts (SPD Pedals): Practice clicking into SPD pedals quickly and confidently under pressure. This eliminates lost time and ensures a secure connection for powerful strokes.
• Traction Awareness: On loose or wet surfaces, emphasize controlled force to prevent rear-wheel slipping. Teach them to feel for the terrain’s grip and adjust their power accordingly.
• Rival Management: Practice starts in group scenarios to mimic race conditions. Your child will learn to hold their line and stay composed even with competitors on either side.
