Starting gear:
- Choose an optimal gear so the first 2-3 pedal strokes is can be made with raw power – not high cadence and spining
Pedal Position:
- Start with the dominant foot on the forward pedal in the 2 o’clock position. This position provides the best leverage for a powerful first stroke.
- The non-dominant foot should be on the ground, ready to push off.
Body Position:
- Lean slightly forward over the handlebars to ensure maximum power transfer.
- Keep elbows bent and shoulders relaxed, ready to absorb movement.
- Look ahead at the intended line—not down at the bike.
Mental Preparation:
- Teach your child to focus on the countdown or whistle, staying calm but alert. A strong start begins with a sharp reaction time.
THE INITIAL PUSH Launch:
- As the whistle blows, push off with the grounded foot while driving the dominant foot down with maximum force.
- Simultaneously lift the non-dominant foot onto the pedal, ensuring the first two strokes are strong and fluid.
Weight Distribution:
- Shift weight slightly back to maintain rear-wheel traction, especially on loose surfaces.
- Avoid leaning too far back or forward—find a centered stance for balance and control.
