IDENTIFYING YOUR COACHING STYLE AND ITS IMPACT

Parents naturally gravitate toward different coaching styles based on their own upbringing, personality, and expectations. Some might be more nurturing and hands-off, while others might be more structured or demanding. Reflecting honestly on your approach and how it affects your child is critical. Common Coaching Styles:

  • Supportive and Patient: Encouraging effort, celebrating improvements, and maintaining a positive atmosphere.
  • Directive and Achievement-Oriented: Focused on winning and performance, sometimes at the cost of fun and exploration.
  • Over-Involved or Overbearing: Excessive pressure, high expectations, and controlling behavior that can lead to stress and resentment.

Being Supportive Vs. Overbearing: Striking The Right Balance The line between being a supportive parent and an overbearing one can be fine, but the impact on a child’s motivation and enjoyment of cycling is significant. A supportive parent helps their child set their own goals, provides constructive feedback, and celebrates progress. An overbearing parent, on the other hand, imposes their own expectations, harshly criticizes mistakes, and becomes overly focused on results. Striking the right balance ensures that cycling remains a source of joy, growth, and confidence for your child.

Practical Tip Ask your child for feedback on how your involvement feels to them. Children are often honest and can provide insights that help you adjust your style.
