Confidence is a cornerstone of athletic success. A confident young cyclist is more willing to take on new challenges, persist in the face of difficulty, and bounce back from disappointments. Confidence is nurtured through consistent, positive feedback, opportunities for success, and recognition of effort over results. Methodology
- Start with small, achievable goals. If your child struggles with cornering, break the skill down into simpler steps and celebrate each improvement.
- Positive reinforcement: Highlight what they did well before pointing out areas to improve. A “compliment sandwich”—praise, then constructive feedback, then praise again—can be effective.
Practical Tip Keep a “success journal.” After each ride, ask your child to write down one thing they did well. Over time, this creates a tangible record of their growth, reinforcing their sense of competence.
