Dear Reader,
Welcome to a journey inspired by my experiences as a parent of a young cyclist. My son, a spirited rider, embraced biking at the age of three, skipping training wheels altogether. By the time he turned five, we discovered a local cycling club, and soon our routine was punctuated by regular training sessions. His enthusiasm and early achievements in amateur races spurred me to dive headfirst into the intricate world of cycling.
Like many parents, I sought to understand the essentials—teaching fundamental cycling skills, mastering advanced techniques, and fostering a love for the sport. Along the way, I realized there wasn't a single resource to guide me through this multifaceted journey. I pieced together my understanding through hands-on experiences, conversations with coaches, and the inevitable trial and error. Over the years, we navigated countless bike upgrades, training discussions, and race-day challenges, making cycling a shared adventure and a source of invaluable learning.
This first volume of Ride to Race is designed to be your companion in teaching your child to ride confidently and skillfully. It covers foundational skills for beginners, advanced techniques for aspiring racers, and essential tips for building resilience and enjoyment in the sport. Whether you're just starting or looking to refine your child's abilities, this book offers practical guidance drawn from my own experiences as a cycling parent.
Looking ahead, Volume 2, Parents' Guide to Race Participation and Bike Parts, complements this book by delving into the art of race-day management and the technical aspects of cycling equipment. Together, these two volumes provide a complete roadmap for parents navigating the cycling journey with their children—from the first wobbly rides to the thrill of competitive racing.
